FIRST EUROPEAN TITLES AWARDED IN ALKMAAR

The Junior and Mixed Relay Men’s and Women’s Time-Trial opened today in Alkmaar (Netherlands) at the 2019 edition of the Road European Championships that will finish with the Men’s Elite race on Sunday 11 August.

On the opening day, the host country, the Netherlands, won two gold medals, one silver and one bronze.

The organising country won the first title on offer in the Women Juniors, with the success of Shirin Van Anrooij who raced the 22 kilometres of the circuit (the same in all categories) in 30:18” ahead of the Russian Aigul Gareeva who finished in 30:20” and the Swede Wilma Olausson third in 42”.

Italian success in the Men’s with Andrea Piccolo who triumphed in a time of 26:52” averaging 50 kilometres per hour in front of the Dutch rider Lars Boven (27:04”) and Enzo Leijnse third at 27:06”.

Today the first Mixed Relay continental title, the mixed team time-trial with three Men and three Women per national team, was also awarded.

In this race, the Netherlands team came in first place with Koen Bowman, Bauke Mollema, Ramon Sinkeldam, Floortje Mackaij, Riejanne Markus and Amy Pieters, winning a historic gold medal.  The team covered the two laps of the circuit in 52:49” (one for the Men’s trio and one for the Women’s), in front of Germany by 15”  (Marco Mathis, Jasha Sutterlin, Justin Wolf, Lisa Brennauer, Lisa Klein and Mieke Kroegernd) and Italy by 1:25”  (Edoardo Affini, Manuele Boaro, Davide Martinelli, Vittoria Guazzini, Elisa Longoborghini and Silvia Valsecchi),

The European Championships will resume tomorrow with the time-trial races for the Under 23 and Men’s and Women’s Elite categories.
