The third day of the 2021 Road European Championships in Trento (Italy) ended with the win by the Italian Silvia Zanardi in the Women’s Under 23 race.
Silvia Zanardi earned a third gold medal for Italy in this continental event, after a thrilling and hard-fought race.
The French riders tried to get ahead right from the start with a long series of attacks which gradually reduced to the best of the peloton. In the final stages, a trio emerged including the Hungarian Kata Blanka Vas, Silvia Zanardi and Evita Muzic (France).
In the sprint Silvia Zanardi, multiple champion on the track, achieved a clear win over Vas and the French rider Muzic.
In the Men’s Juniors, victory for Romain Gregoire, already national champion in the Road race and Time-Trial.
After a particularly fast start with a long series of attacks which enabled the Italian Pellizzari to race alongside the Dutch rider Huising and the Norwegian Kulset, the decisive action came in the last eight laps of the race.
At approximately 10 kilometres from the finish, on the Povo climb, a trio came together including the French Lenny Martinez and Roamin Gregoire and the Norwegian Per Strand Hagenes. The three riders immediately worked together and gained a sufficient lead to battle for victory in a three-man sprint.
The finish line in Via Belenzani was crossed first by Gregoire who raised his arms in the air beating Hagenes and his compatriot Lenny Martinez, son of Miguel Martinez, MTB gold medallist in Sydney 2000.
The Women’s Juniors race was won by the German Linda Riedmann after a fiercely fought race.
The entire race was controlled by the Italian, French and Russian riders who tried to reduce the peloton. In the last lap, at just over twenty kilometres from the finish, an attack was launched by Eleonora Ciabocco and Francesca Barale (Italy), Linda Riedmann (Germany), Eglantine Rayer (France), Inna Abaidullina and Alena Ivanchenko (Russia), winner of the gold medal only two days ago in the Time-Trial race.
The final sprint was dominated by the German Riedmann ahead of Eleonora Ciabocco and Eglantine Rayer.
Tomorrow will be the fourth day of the 2021 UEC Road European Championships in Trento with the Men’s Under 23 Road and Women’s Elite races.
